Dow launches a new generation of high-tack adhesive for electric vehicle batteries

New innovative high-tack thermoelastic adhesive solutions improve safety, durability and integrated assembly of EV batteries

Shanghai, China – November 5, 2022 – A new generation of VORATRON™ MA 8200S High Tack Adhesiveswas presented by Dow (NYSE: DOW) at the 5th China International Import Expo (CIIE 2022). New VORATRON™ MA 8200S High Tack Adhesives significantly improve the safety, durability, durability, integrated assembly and overall performance of electric vehicle battery packs. This breakthrough innovation comes from Dow MobilityScience™, Dow’s innovative solutions for the transportation industry. This new series of adhesives has been successfully applied to “Magic Cube” batteries used by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) MG 4 (MG MULAN).

In the global transport industry, there is a growing demand for smart, automated, electrified and low-carbon solutions, as the next generation of electric vehicles becomes safer, greener and more innovative. In recent years, industry growth has been fueled by innovations in batteries and their mass production. SAIC’s “Magic Cube” batteries, in particular, come with complex and stringent material bonding and cell requirements.
Assembly.

The person in charge of research and development of MG 4 (MG MULAN) says that the company has overcome many difficulties in the R&D process, especially with regard to technical iteration and commercial mass production of the batteries. Magic Cube, due to the company’s strict requirements. global high quality requirements. The Dow and SAIC R&D team have worked together to continuously improve technologies and products during the product research and development period to achieve rapid iteration. This effort ultimately led to the creation of the ideal high-level, high-quality bonding adhesive solution, resulting in a breakthrough breakthrough for the project.

In addition, Dow’s VORATRON™ MA 8200S high-tack adhesives comply with European Union RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations, which both apply to products intended for sale in the EU. Therefore, with RoHS and REACH certifications, VORATRON™ MA 8200S high tack adhesives can also boost the global development of MG 4 (MG MULAN) when combined with Dow’s global layout.

The innovative VORATRON™ MA 8200S high tack adhesives are primarily intended for bonding cells with insulating bottom shells, top cover plates and side plate stiffeners, including high tack adhesives of platform cell bottoms E2 electrified, top cover high tack adhesives and side panel high tack adhesives.

Driving safety ensured by higher and more stable bonding force.

  • Meeting the vibration challenge of electric vehicles: With VORATRON™ MA 8200S high-tack adhesives, industry can effectively meet the daily challenges of low-amplitude, high-frequency battery vibration. Its lower storage module allows for long-term vibration energy absorption and makes the batteries safer and longer lasting
  • Maintaining strong adhesion in harsh environments: The excellent aging resistance of this series of products meets the adhesion requirements of accelerated aging tests.
  • Improve battery durability: VORATRON™ MA 8200S High Tack Adhesives are ideal for bonding between different substrates. Due to its superior asymmetric interface binding capabilities, the battery lasts much longer and interface stresses are significantly reduced.

Green development of electric vehicles with sustainable innovation.

  • Reduced battery weight and improved battery life: Full aluminum alloy and composite battery boxes are becoming increasingly popular with the growing demand for lightweight automobiles. As the hull material cannot be welded or riveted, the high tack adhesives reduce the number of auxiliary parts to reinforce the ribs, thus reducing the weight of the batteries and the complete vehicle.
  • Supporting sustainable development with biosourced materials: Dow’s product formulations contain bio-based components, which support customers’ journey to lower carbon emissions.
  • Facilitate the dismantling and recycling of batteries: By using Dow’s revolutionary primer materials and VORATRON™ MA 8200S high-tack adhesives, the battery recycling and dismantling process becomes simpler and easier.

Improved production efficiency through more integrated assembly.

  • Flexible hardening technique adapted to different assembly conditions: Thanks to its specially developed latent curing technique, VORATRON™ MA 8200S high-tack adhesives achieve accelerated curing strength at different temperatures. It can be cured at room temperature or elevated temperature to meet the specific needs of various industries
  • Low-hardness, equipment-friendly filler formula: VORATRON™ MA 8200S Series High Tack Adhesives are manufactured with a low hardness filler compound. It helps to reduce wear and tear on critical mixing equipment and minimize maintenance checks, while enabling optimal production and assembly.
  • The unique combination of hydrophobic formulas reduces the maintenance burden: Due to its unique formula design, the isocyanate component of VORATRON™ MA 8200S High Tack Adhesives provides superior water resistance. This simplifies manufacturing and storage, with increased latitude of production conditions, reduced equipment maintenance, and the possibility of continuous high-intensity production.

Due to its innovation and performance, the VORATRON™ MA 8200S High-Tack Adhesive was also named a 2022 R&D 100 Award Finalist, recognizing new commercial products, technologies and materials for their technological significance.

“We have achieved a number of innovative breakthroughs and outstanding achievements through our close collaboration with SAIC,” said Dr. Weiguang Yao, Chief Technology Officer, Dow Asia Pacific. “All of this has been possible thanks to our unwavering pursuit of quality excellence and strict adherence to high standards. The successful application of VORATRON™ MA 8200S high tack adhesives on MG MULAN not only represents Dow’s promise to be “customer centric”, but also demonstrates Dow’s commitment to driving innovation and development in the electric vehicle industry. »
