Bill Skillman Takes Third Victory and Leads in Factory Stock Showdown Points
Bill Skillman and his Ray Skillman Ford Cobra took their third win of the season, reclaimed the points lead and claimed the $1,000 bounty on Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsport Park, the fifth stop on the schedule Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown.
Skillman, the #1 qualifier, took on #2 qualifier David Barton and his Saw Mill Auto Chevy COPO Camaro in the final round. Barton would have the starting line advantage with a 0.009 reaction time to Skillman’s 0.067, but Skillman and his Ford Cobra would crush the Barton and his COPO Camaro. Skillman’s 7.810-second pass at 177.07 mph beat Barton’s 7.869 at 180.09 with a margin of victory of just 0.001 seconds.
“The car has been running really well. We’re generating a lot of power,” Skillman said. “This team that I have worked hard and I’m really proud of them. It was a big win for us.”
The win sends Skillman around Barton in the Constant Aviation points standings and earns Skillman $1,000 for beating Barton, the event’s final winner, through the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown bounty program. Skillman will now carry the $1,000 bounty and it will increase until another driver beats him in the eliminations.
“It’s great to get that third win, but the points are still so tight with three races to go. That final was closer than I would have liked, but it was a great final. A win is a win “Skillman said. “I got the bounty, so I got some of my money back. I’m going to spend this bounty money on race car parts.”
On the way to victory, Skillman beat Lee Hartman, Dan Condon and David Janac before defeating Barton. Barton would pass Alan Scruggs, Ricky Hord and Mark Pawuk of Ohio before reaching Skillman in the final.
The ongoing battle between the Chevrolet COPO Camaros, Ford Cobra Jets and Dodge Challenger Drag Paks will resume at the Dodge Power Brokers NHRA USA National Championships at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, August 31-September 5.
