Army personnel disassemble and assemble a Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in less than 2 minutes [Video]
Recently, the Indian Armed Forces decided to replace the aging Maruti Suzuki Gypsy with more capable and newer 4X4 vehicles. However, the importance of the iconic Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in the armed forces is undeniably irreplaceable. The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is one of the lightest 4X4 vehicles and after decades of use, the armed forces know every element and every part of the vehicle. Here is a video that shows BSF personnel disassembling and then reassembling a Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in less than 2 minutes!
The video was recorded during a training exercise. The video shows the Gypsy with the ‘Chetak’ nameplate. Battalions give names to their war vehicles and this one is named after the brave war horse of Maharana Pratap of the Mewar dynasty in Rajasthan.

The video shows a group of soldiers driving the vehicle and then stopping halfway to completely dismantle the vehicle. They first stripped the vehicle of body panels including the hood, doors, and frame-mounted bodywork. They also remove the steering, engine and transmission unit. In the end, they remove the front and rear axles with the tires mounted on them.
It all feels like a Formula 1 pit stop. The synchronization between the staff is impeccable.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is no longer manufactured
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy was officially discontinued by the manufacturer last year. The SUV could not meet the new safety standards issued by the government. However, it remains one of the most sought after vehicles especially by the off-road community in India. The Gypsy is a lightweight gas-powered 4X4 SUV, which is why it performs so well. The SUV can cross any type of terrain and can also be easily modified. This is why the Gypsy is one of the most commonly used vehicles by paramilitary forces in the country.
Maruti Suzuki is yet to launch a replacement for the Gypsy in India, however, we might see the all-new Jimny in the Indian market by next year. The all-new Jimny is a similar lightweight, gasoline-powered off-road vehicle and even it can take on extreme challenges.
Why is Gypsy so popular?
Among the armed forces, the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is extremely popular for various reasons. The light weight of the Gypsy makes it a very capable off-roader. Gypsy is also very compact and can be dropped from the air using parachutes.
One of the problems that the armed forces have faced when using the Gypsy is the use of gasoline. While all other forces equipment runs on diesel, the Gypsy is the only vehicle in the army fleet that runs on gasoline. Transporting fuel separately becomes a logistical problem.
