WR introduced 15 car rakes on the slow corridor between Andheri and Virar on the suburban section of Mumbai, improving load capacity to relieve commuters. With this, we have now increased twenty-five other 15 car services. In addition, 8 additional AC EMU rakes were introduced, bringing the total to 20 services. To date, WR runs 1375 EMU rakes on its suburban section of Mumbai. Additionally, to add to passenger convenience and seamless connectivity, 44 Andheri services on the Harbor Line have been extended to Goregaon (all Andheri services extended to and from Goregaon)
In order to keep the wheels of Mumbai’s commuter trains running during the monsoons, WR meticulously planned and executed various important monsoon-related works in the suburban section in mission mode. The runway flood problem has been proactively solved by designing custom solutions for the affected areas and using the latest machinery as well as technology, such as micro tunneling method, waterway construction underground, conducting surveys by drones, including installing high-powered pumps, cleaning and removing sand from culverts, nullahs and drains, running mud specials, etc. Major works relating to the removal of operational constraints have been carried out in the suburban section of Mumbai, thereby improving mobility and safety in rail operations.
In addition, for the safety of commuters, WR has implemented a state-of-the-art mobile radio communication system for commuter trains, a first of its kind on IR. It allows the communication between the EMU train crew with the control center as well as the broadcasting of calls by the passenger control and also between all the EMU cabins, which is useful in case of emergency.
WR introduced the Unified Command and Control Center (UCCC) at Mumbai Central Station. This cutting-edge technology with advanced functionality will enable data collection, data monitoring and help to make decisions in real time, improving security and value for money. Security measures are also reinforced in local trains to protect passengers, especially commuters, from antisocial elements, etc. 189 cars of 48 local trains were fitted with 1397 CCTV cameras. Out of 189 coaches, 140 are female coaches while 49 are general coaches. No longer in tow in 2022.
With a view to strengthening the infrastructure, improving safety and mobility, the works of 20 ROBs, 78 RUBs have been completed and 20 FOBs have been put into service this year. Likewise, 24 escalators and 17 elevators were also put into service this year on WR. On WR’s Mumbai suburban rail network, 14 new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) were put into service in fiscal year 2020-21, while 5 more FOBs and one footbridge were put into service during this fiscal year until December 2021. 14 new escalators were put into service during fiscal year 2020-21. while 6 new elevators were put into service during this fiscal year until December 2021 and 5 new elevators were put into service during the current fiscal year. In addition, another 22 escalators and 10 elevators will be commissioned by the end of the current fiscal year. Frere ROB located between Charni Road and Grant Road stations on the Churchgate – Virar section was built in 1921. After the structural audit of the ROB in September 2019, IIT Bombay recommended the immediate repair of beams as an emergency measure. Dismantling work on the existing bridge began in January 2020. Despite containment related to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 23, 2020, WR completed the re-beam and reinforcement of the sub-structure with jacketing, including ROB’s approach work. It was rebuilt at a cost of Rs 18.65 crore.
