Elon’s smartest idea: to make Tesla a tech company, not an auto company
There is an interesting discussion on Reddit Tesla about what made Tesla so successful and the discussion starter shared some interesting points about what he called Elon Musk’s smartest idea that made the Tesla’s success. He says one of Elon’s smartest ideas about Tesla was to make it a tech company, not an auto company.
I have paraphrased the original part of the discussion and I present it here for the readers of Torque News.
One of the biggest issues for many alternative / environmental energy companies is that their focus is how their product is going to save the world. All the customer has to do is buy the product and it will save the world! Everyone feels good, pat on the back, the environment is preserved.
They forget that most humans are selfish and respond to their passions and desires. We got there this way because we humans are greedy. We want the coolest toys, the biggest guns, the tastiest fruit. Plus, most of us think we’re going to die before the world burns down. It’s hard to worry about something that won’t affect you at all (even if it will affect your children and grandchildren).
So take your greedy people and put them in front of two cars. One is marketed as: eco-friendly, faux leather, no animals were harmed while making this car, 0-60 in 5 seconds so as not to waste energy.
The other is: “wrrrraaahh me so tuff.” When you lead me, you are faster, stronger, better. Big strong ice cream. Buy our cars, and you get fucked. It’s all about you.
Our foodie is going to buy the second car, because he cares about himself first and then about the others.
This is how Tesla wins. Instead of focusing on the EV part and how buying a Tesla will help save the planet, Tesla is focusing on what greedy humans want: cool gadgets, glass ceilings, doors to falcon wings, an autopilot. They make an electric car for greedy and self-centered people. In fact, everyone does.
Tesla is also successful because Tesla means a lot of things to a lot of different people, as another user explains on Reddit.
- For Prius tree enthusiasts, this is zero emissions.
- For Techies, it’s an iPhone on wheels.
- For the gas-powered head, it’s a ridiculous fast car that smokes almost everything else.
- For those who hate to drive, AP is a godsend for heavy traffic.
- For the 2 vegans, it’s a flywheel without killed animals.
- This is why it is successful.
Do you agree?
Supercharging is a big plus for Tesla’s success. One person comments on Reddit saying, “A friend of mine at home (in Norway) has a Mercedes EQC and a Tesla Model 3. They still chose to take the Model 3 on road trips just because of the hassle. to charge EQC when they’re on the road … the competition still has a long way to go.
